5 places for walks in Almaty

Arbat (from the Opera House to TSUM)

A pedestrian street in the very heart of Almaty. It’s cozy to walk here any time of the year: in summer — with street musicians and cafés, in winter — with festive lights. Along Arbat, you’ll find artists, souvenir stalls, a fountain, and a lively city atmosphere.

Terrenkur (Terenkour)

A walking path along the Malaya Almatinka river, from the Kazakhstan Hotel up to the upper Dostyk Avenue. A perfect spot for walking, jogging, and fresh air year-round. Shady trees in summer, snowy scenery with mountain views in winter.

Along the Esentai River (Upstream from Esentai Mall)

A scenic trail along the river from Esentai Mall towards Kamenka. A natural route through hills, trees, and a murmuring stream — great for relaxing walks, light hikes, and cycling. Beautiful in all seasons — from lush greenery to snowy landscapes.

First President’s Park

A large park in the southern part of the city with well-kept paths, fountains, flowerbeds, and stunning mountain views. Ideal for slow walks, scooters, and family photos. In autumn — golden leaves, in winter — festive decorations.

Central Park of Culture and Leisure (Gorky Park)

The oldest park in Almaty with a pond, green paths, paid attractions, and a zoo (also paid), but the main area is free. Perfect for family strolls and outdoor fun year-round.

Botanical Garden

A vast natural park with exotic trees, lilac groves, conifers, wooden bridges, and ponds. Great for peaceful walks, photo shoots, and nature lovers. Open all year.

Entrance fee:
• Approx. 1000 KZT (~$2)

(Where to buy everything — from luxury fashion to fresh fruits and antiques)

Popular Shopping Malls

MEGA Alma-Ata, MEGA Park (Seifullin Street), Dostyk Plaza. The largest and most modern mall in Almaty. Here you’ll find clothing stores (Zara, H&M, LC Waikiki), electronics, pet shops, a large supermarket, a food court, a cinema, and kids’ play areas.

Esentai Mall — A premium shopping center in the city’s business district, featuring top global fashion brands such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Chanel, Prada, Max Mara, Rolex, Burberry, and more. Enjoy luxury boutiques, fine dining, an art gallery, and a high-end cinema.

Barakholka

A massive marketplace in the northern part of the city, made up of dozens of sections and trading halls. You can find literally everything here: clothes, shoes, fabrics, furniture, household items, car parts, groceries, and more.

Good to know:
• Often crowded and busy, especially on weekends
• Expect traffic on the way
• Informal and lively — great for bargains if you know how to negotiate

One of Almaty’s most famous and authentic markets. Here you’ll find fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, nuts, dried fruits, dairy products, national delicacies (kurt, kazy, baursaks), souvenirs, and textiles. A must-visit for culture lovers!

Nearby:
• Oriental market, street food, pharmacies
• Museum of Folk Musical Instruments
